Anxiety disorders are mental health conditions characterized by persistent feelings of fear and worry that impair one's ability to function. Anxiety is a normal emotional response to a stressful situation that resolves once the stress has passed. However, in the case of anxiety disorders, the feelings persist and can worsen over time.
Although people with anxiety disorders may have similar symptoms, the focus of their fears and worries differ. Common anxiety disorders include:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is defined by persistent and excessive worry about a variety of things. People suffering from generalized anxiety disorder may be overly concerned about money, health, family, work, or other issues. They may be overly concerned about actual events or may expect the worst even when there is no reason to be concerned.
Social Anxiety Disorder also known as social phobia, is characterized by intense fear in social situations. People suffering from social anxiety are concerned about being judged by others or embarrassing themselves.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is characterized by unwanted thoughts that cause anxiety. These thoughts can trigger compulsive behaviors that alleviate anxiety.
Agoraphobia is fear and avoidance of places, events, or situations (e.g., using public transport or being in crowds or tight, close quarters that may be difficult to exit).
Panic disorder is characterized by unexpected panic attacks. A panic attack can cause shaking, sweating, or chest pain. These attacks occur without warning and last for several minutes.
Specific phobias are fears associated with specific objects or situations, such as a fear of heights, spiders, or flying.
If you experience persistent and extreme feelings of fear or worry that interferes with your daily life, you should consider being evaluated. An evaluation at Rappore begins with competing Rappore’s Mental Health Fingerprint® which will assist in matching you with a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist. During your initial consultation, your clinician will use the information from this questionnaire to develop an effective treatment plan.
Rappore clinicians will customize your treatment plan based on your diagnosis, symptoms, and objectives. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are empirically supported treatments for a range of anxiety disorders. As part of your treatment plan, you may also be prescribed psychotropic medication.
